Three months after Hewlett-Packard’s (HPQ) $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm (PALM) closes in July, we should begin seeing the first HP devices running the smartphone maker’s webOS operating system. Among them: A tablet.

That’s the word from Marty Wong, head of HP’s Personal Systems Group in Taiwan, anyway.

“The HP Slate will hit the market before the end of the fiscal year ending in October, and consumers could see a wide range of software and application support at launch,” Wong told DigiTimes.

It’s worth noting that HP’s intentions for webOS at this point seem to revolve only around tablets and smartphones. Wong said the company has no plans for a webOS netbook.

Yahoo Shows Big Profit Increase on Still-Soft Revenue (All the Slides and Numbers Here)

Yahoo said its net income spiked to $310 million, or 22 cents a share, in the first quarter. Revenue, after subtracting what Yahoo pays in advertising commissions, was $1.13 billion.

Wall Street was expecting earnings of nine cents per share and net revenue of $1.17 billion.

A year ago, Yahoo (YHOO) earned $117.6 million, or eight cents per share.

“We had a good quarter, delivering income from operations higher than our outlook,” Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz said in a statement.

Yahoo benefited from a seven cent per share gain from the sale of Zimbra, as well as cost savings from its newish search and advertising partnership with Microsoft (MSFT).

Removing unusual items, EPS was 15 cents, up 77 percent year over year.

While the profit increase is a good thing, Wall Street is still looking for revenue growth from the Silicon Valley Internet giant and so is Bartz, who has promised increases.

Without taking out the ad commissions, revenue was up just one percent to $1.6 billion.

In any case, it is the best performance under the leadership of Bartz yet, helped by the turnaround in the online advertising industry.

Another strong note: Display ads were up 20 percent year over year, said Yahoo, much higher than analysts’ expectations of about 12 percent. But search growth was down again, this time 14 percent compared with last year.

Yahoo shares declined in after-hours trading, dropping to $17.96 after closing at $18.38.

Enter Dan Zarrella, a self-described “social media marketing & viral marketing scientist,” who has been doing some interesting research about the way Facebook users share Web links. Some of his findings, in ascending order of usefulness:

• Facebook users aren’t interested in sharing stories about Twitter.
• They are interested in sharing stories that have numbers in the titles.
• They’re most interested in sharing stories when they read them on the weekend.

It’s not surprising that people who use Facebook aren’t terribly interested in stories about Twitter–unlike Twitter-obsessed Twitter users. And there’s not much a publisher can do with that info. The fact that people like numbers and lists is behind a magazine trick the Web has already embraced wholeheartedly.

Zarrella’s research about weekend posts, though, is worth chewing on for a second. He suggests that Facebook users are more likely to share stuff on weekends because they lack time to get on the site during the work week.

But if that were the case, you’d figure Facebook would have a well-documented usage drop from Monday through Friday. And if someone’s reported on that, I haven’t seen it.

Here’s a guess I can’t back up with numbers: Maybe people are more apt to share stuff on the weekends because they’ve got more time to read.

In any event, Zarrella’s advice to post items on the weekend is sensible, but limited–there aren’t a lot of Web publishers who can take a pass on five days each week.

Facebook Waves Off “Fan,” Gives “Like” a Thumbs Up

Goodbye “fan.” Hello “like.”

That’s the message Facebook is passing along to its advertisers today. In a move that’s both minor and telling, the social network is replacing its “fan” buttons with “like” buttons on ads that direct users to big brands’ “fan pages.”

“Fan pages” are an increasingly big part of Facebook’s business. They’re in many ways a throwback to the branded sites AOL (AOL) set up in its heyday, giving the brands a chance to stake out real estate in the heavily trafficked social network. Brands can set them up for free, but are encouraged to buy Facebook ads promoting the mini-sites.

So what’s up with the verb change? A couple things:

• “Like” makes a lot more sense to Facebook users than “become a fan of.” Facebook says users already hit the “like” button in other contexts–in status updates and photos, for example–twice as often as they “fan” something.
• Facebook is on a bigger push to add the “like” button throughout the Web as a way of funneling more and more interaction onto its platform. Expect to hear more about this at the the company’s developer conference next month.
